Get Back to the Gifts You Have Been Blessed With

"My passion has always been to get back to the gifts I have been blessed with" - Doug Corbett

My first reaction when seeing a stranger at my front door is typically one of dread. Many don't pay attention to our "No Soliciting" sign, or somehow "miss" it. Admittedly we are a bit more friendly when the children stop by with their fund raisers. After all, who can resist the sweet plea of a child? I'm often not the friendliest greeter of adults that I don't know, especially since they typically interrupt dinner preparation. It was different however, with our surprise visitor on Thanksgiving Eve. Carrying a large white three-ring binder with an amazing drawing of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple on the cover, immediately grabbed my attention.

Doug Corbett is a humble, kind man who took the time to share with us some of his amazing work. Yes, I was fascinated by the details of his drawings of various LDS temples, but there was more. I just had to know the WHY. Doug lives in Salt Lake City and yet he ventured all the way to our rather small, but growing community in Utah County, to share his work. I knew instantly that it was more than just a way for him to make extra money. There was a light in his eyes as he shared each drawing. I quickly got a feel for how much they meant to him. I briefly shared my Work Your Wisdom story, and asked Doug if he would be so kind as to allow me to share his with you. Permission was granted!

"From drafting classes while attending high school in Salt Lake City and the study of architecture at the University of Utah I found a passion and a love of how architectural design not only plays into our daily lives but the power it has to uplift our senses and inspire.

As part of a class assignment at the Univ. of Utah I learned the use of architectural rapidograph pens. This inspired me to create a very unique and detailed pen and ink line drawing of The Salt Lake Temple that captures all the fine detail of the building's front facade and make it appear almost three dimensional.

Making prints of the drawing I soon found that many people wanted copies of my art for themselves as I went door-to-door selling them in the early 1980's which then spawned a desire to draw other LDS Temples that members had an emotional connection to. I made limited editions in certain print sizes which are still hanging in many homes today.

But it was always more of a hobby primarily as I then spent time raising a family dealing in real estate and other endeavors. But, my passion has always been to get back to the gifts I have been blessed with.

I am now prepared to share my art with a larger audience as I have been inspired by so many who have shown great admiration towards my work. Thank you!"
