How'd I Get Here?
Last month my employment ended in a termination due to an acquisition by a larger corporation. Although the sale of the company was not a surprise, I found myself in a very undesirable situation.
Firstly, I had worked so hard for the success of the company and its founders, that I can’t deny that there wasn’t a great letdown that this is how it would all end. Secondly, here I sit nearly ten years older entering the job market. Reality is that it is not easy for us more mature individuals with years of experience to compete with young people just starting their careers, willing to accept lower pay.
Leaving the office on that final day with a box of my personal belongings, the thought came to me: “How do I redefine myself now?”
I spent the next week updating my LinkedIn page, revising my resume and searching for jobs. As I began to re-evaluate my skills, interests and experiences, all I could think about was how I did not want to work for anyone else again.
Although I loved my company family, I was not passionate about the products we sold. So, I began by asking myself what drives me and what I am passionate about. What can I do to make a difference in the life of others by transforming mine?
From a stack of papers on my home desk, I pulled out the copies of the SisterUp 5 Day Challenge that I printed off back in September of last year. For five days, I focused on this challenge and inspiration began to flow.
The excitement of this new creation was exhilarating, but HOW do I generate an income? Then the quote from Day 1, kept reminding me: “He who has a WHY to live for can bear almost any HOW” -- Friedrich Nietzche.
Being passionate about the business idea and the thought of helping others seemed greater than the need I had for making money. Then I felt reassured that if I do the WHY, the HOW will follow.
This is how I got here and the journey going forward is my gift to us all!
With wisdom and love...
